How to create a custom theme in Word Press?

With this post we begin a series where we shall develop a WordPress theme from scratch.

We start with the assumption that you have already installed WordPress on your local machine. In this example we are using Wampserver.

Our WordPress is installed at http://localhost/mytheme/ and this is how the site looks in Chrome after I log in.

This is the directory view of the WordPress installation under www in Wampserver.

Open the wp-content directory, then the themes directory and create a directory called champaktheme over there.

Create two files
1. index.php
2. style.css
and we have created our first theme.

Now, login in to WordPress, goto Appearance/Themes

The new theme is available. It doesn’t do anything now, but its up and running.

Stay tuned.
